Unit History & Context: B Company of the 2nd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment carried the "Nightbirds" callsign during their Operation Enduring Freedom 2006-2008 deployment, flying the CH-47D Chinook (the older D-model, before the unit transitioned to the upgraded F-model that the Blackcats now operate). The "Nightbirds" identity captured the company's night-flight ops tempo — moving troops, equipment, and humanitarian cargo across Afghanistan under cover of darkness. "It's all GREEN, baby" is a direct reference to the green phosphor of AN/AVS-6 ANVIS night-vision goggles — the world Chinook pilots inhabit for hours at a time on NVG missions.
