Unit History & Context: Task Force ODIN — Observe, Detect, Identify, and Neutralize — was a U.S. Army aerial intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance task force that revolutionized counter-IED and high-value-target operations in Iraq and later Afghanistan. Standing up in 2006 with the 306th Military Intelligence Battalion (Aerial Exploitation) as its core, ODIN combined manned reconnaissance aircraft (C-12, MC-12) with unmanned MQ-1C Gray Eagle systems to fuse full-motion video, signals intelligence, and rapid targeting in a single airborne package. The unit was widely credited with disrupting insurgent IED-emplacement networks and changed how the Army thinks about aerial ISR.
Symbology: The Norse god Odin — one-eyed, raven-shouldered, spear-bearing — supplies the namesake. The wolf companion references Geri and Freki from Norse myth. The shield's hexagonal outline echoes both the task force shoulder-sleeve insignia and the modular aerial-ISR mission set.
